Pyongyang: A new agreement between Russia and North Korea marks an important milestone in their bilateral relations, especially defense cooperation. Russian state media, reporting from Pyongyang, where President Putin is currently visiting, highlighted the agreement that includes mutual support in the event of an attack.

Quoting Putin, the Russian state news agency described the agreement as a “historic document”, emphasizing its comprehensive nature, especially in terms of mutual defense. Analysts suggest that this agreement could potentially affect the ongoing tensions between Russia and Ukraine.
Former CIA analyst Sue Mi Terry described the meeting between Putin and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un as worrying for global stability. In particular, South Korea had previously warned Russia against exceeding certain military cooperation limits.
In response to the agreement, Kim Jong-un reaffirmed North Korea’s commitment to prompt response in the event of an attack on any country. He described deeper cooperation with Russia as important in pursuing a “multipolar world”.
