Beyoncé surpasses Jay-Z to break record for most Grammy nominations
Beyonce has made history as the most nominated artist in the history of the Grammy Nominations Awards, surpassing her husband Jay-Z. The pair were previously tied with 88 nominations, but Beyoncé has now moved ahead thanks to her latest album, Cowboy Carter.
She leads the pack with 11 nominations this year, including major categories like Album of the Year, Best Country Album and Song of the Year for “Texas Hold ‘Em.”
Other top nominees include Billie Eilish, Kendrick Lamar, Post Malone and Charli XCX, who each received seven nominations.
In a notable nod to The Beatles, the iconic group received a nomination for record of the year for “Now and Then”, an unfinished John Lennon track that was completed last year using AI technology.
The nomination marks 60 years since the Beatles were recognized as Best New Artist at the Grammy Awards, the category they won.

Beyoncé is already the most awarded artist in Grammy history, with 32 wins as a solo artist and an additional three wins with Destiny’s Child. Despite this, she has yet to achieve the highly coveted Album of the Year award, despite receiving four nominations in the category.
Earlier this year, Jay-Z expressed his disappointment at Beyoncé not being recognized in the top category and made a scathing comment while accepting a Lifetime Achievement Award. “I don’t want to embarrass this young lady,” he told the crowd. “But he has more Grammys than anyone, and he’s never won album of the year.”
He added, “So even by your own standards, it doesn’t make any sense. Most Grammys, but never Album of the Year – it doesn’t make any sense.”
Beyoncé’s 11 nominations this year set a new record for the most nominations received by a female artist in a single Grammy season.
This year, Beyoncé’s biggest competition for Album of the Year will likely be Taylor Swift, who has claimed the award four times, more than any other artist.
Swift’s latest release, The Tortured Poets Department, is a raw, sprawling breakup album that was crafted during an exhausting world tour.
The album has earned Swift her seventh nomination for Album of the Year, after spending 15 weeks at number one in the US earlier this year.
Other strong contenders for top honors include Charli XCX, with her fiery pop opus Brat, and Billie Eilish, whose third album “Hit Me Hard & Soft” has been praised for its mature, experimental sound.
In a surprise twist, former Outcast member Andre 3000 took home the award for his instrumental flute album “New Blue Sun”, beating out expected nominees like Ariana Grande and Post Malone.

The Rolling Stones got a nod for best rock album with *Hackney Diamonds*, their first album of original music since 2016, proving they still have the power to turn heads after decades in the game.
Meanwhile, Kendrick Lamar, whose long-running rivalry with Drake has been the subject of much speculation, has taken another big step forward. His diss track *Not Like Us* earned five nominations, including Best Rap Song and Song of the Year, indicating his continued dominance in the genre.
In a truly unique twist, former US President Jimmy Carter has become the oldest-ever Grammy nominee. At age 100, he has been shortlisted for Best Audiobook for *Last Sundays in the Plains*, a collection of prayers and stories he shared as a Sunday School teacher at his church for over 30 years .
Female pop artists are leading the way, but some big names are left out
While cutting-edge female pop stars continued to dominate the main categories, there were some surprising absences from this year’s Grammy nominations.
Katy Perry, whose latest album 143 performed poorly, failed to get any nods, while Dua Lipa, who opened the 2024 Grammy ceremony with a performance, was also overlooked for her album Radical Optimism .
Dolly Parton’s debut rock album Rock Star was not successful, nor was Megan Thee Stallion’s highly anticipated third album, Megan, which failed to earn a spot despite a Best New Artist win a few years earlier.
Country artist Zach Bryan, who won a Grammy earlier this year, also missed out on a Grammy after the decision not to submit his work. In a statement, Bryan explained that he “doesn’t feel comfortable with awards shows turning music into a competition.”
Furthermore, K-pop was left out of this year’s nominations, despite the genre’s massive global success in 2023.
“No Prejudice”
A total of 20,309 entries were submitted for consideration in 94 categories, and voters are now beginning the process of narrowing down the nominees before the final ballots are cast in January.
This year, the Recording Academy, which oversees the Grammy Awards, welcomed 2,000 new members, bringing the total number of voters to 13,000. Nearly two-thirds of these members have joined since 2018, as part of a larger initiative to diversify and modernize the academy amid criticism of its lack of relevance, particularly with regard to the music of black artists.
In July, Grammy CEO Harvey Mason Jr. addressed voters, emphasizing that “there is no room for bias, prejudice or reckless voting in our organization.”
The final results will be revealed during the star-studded Grammy ceremony in Los Angeles on February 2, 2025.
