More than 50 people have lost their lives in a tragic stampede during a religious gathering in northern India, according to authorities.
The incident took place at a satsang program in Uttar Pradesh’s Hathras district, where people had gathered to worship Hindu deity Shiva in Mughalgarhi village.
“Doctors have informed me about 50-60 deaths,” said District Magistrate Ashish Kumar, noting that more than 20 of the victims were women. The stampede occurred when attendees were leaving the event, prompting a high-level committee to investigate the cause.
While efforts are underway to identify the dead, officials are focusing on providing assistance to the injured and affected families. Harrowing photographs and videos from the scene have been widely circulated, showing the injured being transported by various means to hospitals.
The incident highlights a recurring issue of security at large-scale religious events in India, where such tragic incidents have occurred in the past.
In 2013, 115 people lost their lives in a tragic stampede during a Hindu festival in Madhya Pradesh.
